The St Enoch Centre is an award-winning shopping centre close to Argyll Street and also fronting onto St Enoch Square in Glasgow’s central shopping area. The building was conceived as a large glass enclosure with a long-span structure that would allow change to occur inside over time to respond to the ever-changing brief for shopping centres. It was also GMW Architects first serious foray into environmentally conscious design. The glass envelope provides a weather enclosure that in addition to allowing flexibility in internal planning, ensures that comfort conditions are maintained in the shopping malls by natural ventilation using outside air at ambient temperatures. This is achieved by the use of automatically activated ventilation grilles at low and high level in the glass envelope working in combination with automatic blinds that induce rising air currents to draw off excessive heat from the malls.
